Celtic Harpist & Sound Artist
Creator of Map of Quiet
Music made for the spaces between. Between waking and sleep, between anxiety and ease.
About
There is a particular quality of silence in Western Montana. Wide, unhurried, alive with something just beneath hearing. Matthew Lyon has spent years learning to listen to it, and longer still learning how to share it.
Matthew is a Celtic harpist and the creator of Map of Quiet. His music begins with 32 strings and travels somewhere much larger. Recorded with high-fidelity spatial audio in the shadow of Glacier National Park, his soundscapes are less compositions than invitations. To slow down, to arrive, to rest without agenda.
I make music for the listener who needs not to be fixed, but simply accompanied.
His path to this work has been anything but straight. A retired educator and a survivor of open-heart surgery, Matthew has performed on stages in Japan and Korea and played quietly for people in the final hours of their lives. That last kind of playing taught him the most. There is no drama required, no resolution needed. Just sound that holds space for whatever a person is carrying.
That understanding lives in everything he records. Whether you find this music in a sleepless 3 a.m. or in a deliberate practice of stillness, it is made for exactly that moment. In his own words:
Map of Quiet is where ancient tradition and modern sound design share a breath. I record and compose here in Western Montana, and I am glad you found your way here.
